To me it is indeed unbelievable how anyone can come forward with an excuse such as this and cast so serious an imputation upon othee, upon this honorable bank. O tempora, O mores ¦ How any Bank could possibly send a cable like this one without the party concerned (you) being aware of it ? And how could this Bank know or be certain enough of the necessary particulars (including the fact that you were willing to pay us a return commission), in order to at all enable it to aot in this deliberate manner, solely on its own responsibility ? How coulâ a Bank possibly act like this without enquiring of the party concerned (you) first of all whether you or they, on your behalf, had at all a right to apply to the Texas Company for this agency

In fact, if the Bank did mysteriously possess all these par- ticulars about a business belonging to others - about a cargo in regari to which the bank'a sole function is that of collecting monies for ao- oount of another, an American bank how is it that they did not know the most important fact of all, namely that you were absolutely debarred from approaching the Texas Company, nay from even only accepting the agency when offered to you ?
